Application to Participate in Design Competition
Healing Environment Berlin 2009

Sense.Sensitive.Design. (SSD) is a research platform using the open source principle that is focused on the meaning of the five senses for holistic environments.

For a project in cooperation with the Charité Hospital in Berlin SSD is announcing a design competition. The goal is to develop an adaptable system of sensory modules for the pediatric station of the renowned hospital. The use of multisensory design and intelligent space concepts should encourage the healing process in the clinic and create an optimal healing environment.

Research facilities, universities companies and persons are cordially invited to actively investigate the possibilities of multisensory communication and to present progressive solution proposals for the healing environment in the pediatric station of the Berlin Charité Hospital.

An application consists of a module for one or more of the senses:
sound, vision, touch, taste and smell.
Applicants are asked to present practical ideas and solutions for this; they are not bound to the existing spaces of the Charité. The networking of this module with other modules for other senses is explicitly encouraged. For example, how can the interaction of sound and vision positively influence the healing proceses of the small patients? Please contact us if you would like more information.

The application to participate in the competition will contain a brief written concept (maximum 2000 characters). It may also include scribbles, sketches, pictures, models, sample materials, etc.

Please send your complete application as a PDF file (max. 7 MB) by e-mail to:
application@sensesensitivedesign.com
The closing date for applications is 01 July 2009.

The participants retain all rights to the contents of their applications. SSD reserves the right to publish the applications in part or in full.

A top-notch jury of experts will select the most interesting concepts.
The members of the jury are:
*   Sissel Tolaas, artist/scientist, Berlin
*   Dr. Jonathan Mueller, neuropsychiatrist, San Francisco
*   Luc Steels, Sony Computer Science Laboratory, Paris
*   Prof. Dr. Zane Berzina, designer and researcher, Weissensee
Kunsthochschule Berlin and Goldsmiths College, University of London
*   Jens Häuser, biologist and curator, Bochum and Paris
*   Hannes Haberl, neurosurgeon, Charité Pediatric Clinic, Berlin

The applicants presenting the most interesting concepts for the sensory modules vision, touch, taste, smell and sound will each receive financial means from Sense.Sensitive.Design. to develop the prototypes for their ideas. The completed prototypes will be presented to the public as part of an exhibit in the International Design Festival DMY from 3 to 7 June 2009 in Berlin. In addition there will be extensive documentation through a publication and an online forum.
